One of the medications prescribed at Be Well is phentermine, also known as Adipex, Ionamin or Fastin. Phentermine was approved by the FDA in 1959 to treat patients who struggle with their weight. Because phentermine has been in use for so many years, it has been well studied and has helped countless patients reach their healthy weight goals. Phentermine is not a quick "just take this pill" fix, but instead should be utilized as a tool combined with increased physical activity and decreased caloric intake. Sometimes these recommendations are easier said than done. That is why our staff is experienced in offering patients comprehensive and personalized support. Phentermine (Adipex) is an appetite suppressant that helps to decrease a person's appetite. Phentermine is categorized as a stimulant therefore most patients have more energy to reach exercise goals and it even increases thirst response to encourage increased water intake. Not all patients are candidates for phentermine. Our experienced Nurse Practitioners will determine if you are a candidate. Patients that have a history of glaucoma (angle closure), hyperthyroidism, uncontrolled hypertension, stroke and/or heart attack, have certain irregularities in heart rate, are breastfeeding or are pregnant are not candidates. A thorough health history will be reviewed during your visit and if you are not a candidate for phentermine, alternative therapeutics will be recommended and discussed.
